Pseudo 1770 Census
for Lunenburg County

A problem with Canadian Censuses taken before 1871 is that they list only the names for heads of households (typically male) and then possibly the numbers of adult and child males and females.

This index attempts to reconstruct the full 1770 census for Lunenburg, Nova Scotia by combining data from two sources:

  • the official 1770 census, which gives only head of household name plus numbers of men, women, boys and girls, and
  • church records: unless specified otherwise, the christening records and marriages up to 1770 are from St John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg; later marriages may have also been performed at Zion Lutheran Church or the Dutch Reform Church in Lunenburg.

The 1770 census data was taken with permission from Bryan KEDDY's site, while the church data was taken with permission from Don SHANKLE's site .

The first data box gives FAMILY NAME, Head of Household Name, and census details (number of men, women, boys, and girls) for the family.

The second data line gives the marriage date (if known), the wife's name, and children's names with christening/birth and marriage dates (as known). Births in 1770 are recorded here even though they might not show up in the census, which was conducted sometime in the early part of the year.

Records of children's deaths were not well kept by clergy. Thus marriage data is included as an indication of survivors. One may tentatively assume that unmarried children were among those whose deaths were not recorded. Marriage data for children known to have been born after 1770 have been deleted.

The discrepancy line points out differences between the census and church data sets.

There may be a further line that gives marriage dates for individuals whose parentage is uncertain and who probably were underage and/or unmarried in 1770. Some of the later marriages (e.g. after 1790) may be for second generation children.

Also included (in red) are families that were not included in the census, but on the basis of other evidence (births after 1770, land transfers, etc.) possibly were present.

There is ample evidence of errors in both sets of data - thus this combined "census" is intended as a best guess.

It is interesting to note that of the some 700 original "Founding Families" of 1753, there were only about 200 remaining 17 short years later. Of the following 237 families, 226 are found in the census; (11 Names) are tentative. Each family can be reached by the following links:
